         Late morning. You had a lot of chores and errands this morning and a couple more to do shortly, the post office and the bank.

         1129 hours. I did get my car license plate renewed as well as two Handicap placards. Some people are too proud to admit their physical condition, but not me. I am not proud to have arthritis to such an extent, and if I can walk less in and out of an establishment I'll do it. I used to have one but two (one for each car) is less of a hassle. Ellie just popped up sitting on the shelf to my left. She misses Paul but this weekend that will be rectified because we will be taking her up to her new home. I'm sure she'll be happier.

         "She'll be more content at home," is better phraseology orndorff. - Amorella

         Mid-afternoon. You are in the living room in fanned and well-conditioned air while Carol is in the kitchen working on the January 2014 budget. Let's go to Dead 19. - Amorella

         You have added two hundred and sixty nine more words to Dead 19 and are stopped without a thought of how to describe Merlyn's face, his soul (outside himself) then his physical body and inner heartanmind. Merlyn's soul lies naked encompassing and shielding Merlyn from Vivian's druidic powers of seduction and bewitchment.

         1735 hours. I do not know how to describe this scene. It is as though Merlyn becomes the opposite of a zombie. He is not walking dead; he is coated with his own immortality and whatever else his soul is in this particularly unique situation. This is metaphysics though not the more common druidic magic. I do not know the words here, but I feel this piece below may be useful:

Western chemistry grew up around alchemical ideas of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. They're called the Aristotelian elements, but they originated with a much earlier thinker -- the Sicilian aristocrat, Empedocles of Acragas.

Not many of Empedocles' writings have survived, and a large mythology now hovers over his person. We have fragments of two book-length poems One was an exploration of nature itself. The other dealt with personal salvation.

He [Empedocles] probably wrote plays, and treatises on medicine, as well. Aristotle credited Empedocles with inventing rhetoric, and with the idea that light moves at a finite speed. But Empedocles is best known for claiming that all matter is formed when the opposing forces of Love and Hate act upon the four elements -- Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

Following (in line) with what has already been said about souls; they are defensive only, they are protectors for heartanmind over mindanheart. The problem with Vivian's current status is that she is in a trajectory of  mindansoulanheart. This shows from her approach to the physical to seduce Merlyn.             Open minded and ready, thinks Merlyn in present day. More than twelve hundred earth years have passed since this endlessly unexpected union, this event-of-a-lifetime, occurred.

            Oily muscular memories stay slipperier-and-faster-and-slippery still. A little wiser smiled great Merlyn's ghost, whose hard-bodied memories -- hers-an-mine or mine-an-hers? An unexpected union that was neither here nor there stays a hurricane force in a funnel narrow; past, future and present tensed; a wonderment bordering on all that is nature there and here -- a reality that has birthed a multitude of universe both singular and plural. Muscle-like in contraction and expansion -- slippery we all flow, greasing the wheels of unseen cars and chariots of undetermined spirits, the forces of nature that stir the universal cooking pots that grow a life unlike their own, a life that gives birth and dies and rises again as the simplest of the four elements we glean as water. Water that is seen simpler still, invisible to the periodic table of even the elements. Such things the mind grasps from whirlwind of heartansoul to soulanheart and back again.

            I am the grass, thinks Vivian, to be laid out upon and loved like Mother Earth herself. A clover sprouts to wait upon the honeybee while I await the anticipation of the flesh-driven plow. Why is this so in his eyes? I am fleshy, furrowed and ready. Old Merlyn drives me down; through what magic is this that he is not made ready for young and hot thoughts too many years undiscovered? For what is, that I am not earthy and worthy enough?

            Why the excitement, thought Merlyn. She is focusing on my wants but I wonder on this young druidess' needs. With a body full of hands she reaches for intimacy. She'll not embrace to discover my physical self this way. I know the sensitivity of these many small muscular controls manhood appears to thrive on. To be stiff is not to be anointed and controlled. Only deep suggestive powers can add to the subliminal artifacts within. She will not have me naked today were she to run her wet lips over the bone of my contention. A contention nuzzled between heart and soul rather than between a natural runner's two thighs to heel and toe bones.

            I will not abandon my duty to self; to resist the natural powers beckoning when it is I a small kernel of nature with will of my own to be a conduit not a bridge to be walked upon and over by kings and queens. Jackals are as eager as this young druidess is, to open and close the windows of my natural order -- she works on brain, bone; muscle and nerves; feeding flesh to flesh to heat the mind which I have turned about -- I am soul first, then heart, then mind. I cannot be penetrated any more than she will be. She stirs in the wrong pot.  

            Strongly souled yet nakedly walled Merlyn challenged his heart to bind and cement the wholeness of his inner nature of the metaphysical frame. Merlyn lay intertwined with woman on the grass. Earth, Air, fire and water is beyond the world of counting moments.

            Vivian suddenly realized her hands were pinning Merlyn's arms to the ground and while the muscles were tense a distraction occurred and he appeared as stone, as if he were about to go to sleep with her fixing herself atop him with both their robes clothing the next further intimacy. She found herself smiling as if this calculated lovemaking was fun and games; which she realized in the moment, that it wasn't.  She released her hands' pressure, but he lay as if he were the grass beneath him.

            Merlyn's soul grabbed from his heart's classical memory the following line, "I, Anaximenes of Miletus, say, 'Just as our soul, being air, holds us together, so do breath and air encompass the whole world.'"

            Off guard and quickly depressing, Vivian froze her eyes into his sight. Her mind said, "There is no window to Merlyn's soul in either ball or pupil. This great Druid has no soul. Thus, an added bolt from her heart, "If Merlyn has no soul, he has no heart."

            Awake to her condition she rose from him saying, "You are a despicable old man, a fart of air. I should never have adored you even once."

            Merlyn continued to lie relaxed as the green blades, "Be gone then, my beautiful Druidess Vivian, and leave me hard in my rest."

Notes - subliminal motor muscles / memories shared /

         Mid-morning. You were up fairly early, did chores, had breakfast, read the Sunday paper; afterwards you and Carol drove to Pine Hill Lakes and walked the north woods to the dam and back. Carol is continuing her walk. You enjoyed the walk, as you have not been on this path for some time now. Even in the shade the sweat is running off you. You both brought ice water, which you are drinking sparingly. With your shoulder you cannot do your regular exercises so this is a substitute. Earlier you used the heating pad that helped ease the pain temporarily, and you took another pain pill. - Amorella

         I always loved walking in the woods and did my share of hiking in my youth and longer walking (almost always in the early morning or evening), two miles or so up to the early fifties. My left shoulder and arm are feeling a little less sensitive this morning. I don't know how I pulled my shoulder but I did. I think I need a nap. (1020)

         You want to get on with Merlyn and Vivian, just to get it done, but that is not the best of attitudes because "getting it done" excludes little caring to do the best job or the passion you normally exclude. Each is new territory for the other. An embrace can carry more intimacy than either suspect. All those unconscious small muscular motor controls can be as sensitive as the fingertip and an unexpected surprise and delight to brain and mind alike. The naked 'touch' of limb on limb and/or toes on toes are magically intimate and deeply suggestive for the further sharing of the subliminal communication of physical bodies. This paragraph shows a more Merlyn attitude than Vivian.

         1213 hours. We are home after spending almost an hour sitting in the shade of McD's at Kings Mill Road watching traffic to and fro from Kings Island. We talked about new cars as well as our grandparents and how in the fifties we both sat out on the back porch shucking homegrown peas or snapping string beans for cooking - shared times, shared memories even though we never did those things together. While at Otterbein we used to drive my 1965 green VW beetle up SR 315 to Delaware in the late afternoon because we could open the small windows in the car doors and vent the cooler shaded air back through the pop out back windows (sun roof open). It was the closest thing to natural air conditioning that we had at the time. Owen and Brennan are growing up in a different world. We even had a real icebox with an ice man coming almost everyday to load it up. I don't remember it being so awfully terrible because we did have fans and shade trees around the houses. This is what older retired people do, recollect the changes seen in a lifetime. As always, there are some good changes and some not so good. (1242)

         Mid-morning. You and Carol read the paper on the deck for a change; there are plenty of trees out back to enjoy. Besides, morning shade is comfortable enough until late morning. Carol is thinking about walking this morning before it is too hot so that is where you are presently.

         0935 hours. We are at Pine Hill Lakes Park, far north lot. Carol is on her walk, mostly in the north woods. I wish this left shoulder would progress faster. I did sleep better with a pain pill and I took one again just before we left.

         Your sugar was up to 155, not good, orndorff. Sometimes you would just like to get out of here too quickly. Pain reminds you of where you are. "No pain, no gain," isn't that the saying? - Amorella

         Of course it is, but not in this context. That is what an athletic coach might say, not you.

         You only had one of personal note, Jim Scarfpin, athletic director and head football coach at Westerville High School. - Amorella

         I liked and admired him. He was a tough, old school coach. Shoot, when I was a freshman in 1956-57 we still had the old leather helmets from the thirties and forties. Coach Scarfpin went along with that era. We even played single wing. I was a pulling guard or pulling tackle, I can't remember which. He reminded me of Knute Rockne, an early hero of mine. He was also a father figure to me like my Uncle Ernie. I remember there was an old movie about his Notre Dame team -- they wore those old leather helmets too.

He is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history. His biography at the College Football Hall of Fame calls him "without question, American football's most-renowned coach."          His daughter Judy and I were in the same class at Westerville. We were always friends. I missed seeing her this year at the picnic. Bill Miller and Judy Scarfpin were close boyfriend/girlfriend in high school and in the freshman year of college at Miami, then drifted apart. At seventy they still see each other at the picnics though. That is so very cool and romantic as far as I am concerned; old friends are a treasure, no question about it. I see Carol coming up out of the woods. Time to go. (1009)

         1056 hours. Stopped up the get a haircut and beard trim but Mary Ann won't be in until Monday. She trims my beard better than anyone I've used for a barber since Sao Paulo days. I liked Brazilian haircuts because they were more European in design and attitude. Of course, what did/do I know. I never in my life have had a Continental or even a UK haircut.

         Mid-afternoon. You are back at the far north lot of Pine Hill Lakes and you both just finished a cone from the Mason Whippy-Dip on U.S. 42. - Amorella

         I thought it was State Route 42 all this time. Pretty bad. No wonder I have to rely on sources whenever possible in writing fiction. Carol is laughing at the Joel Stein column on backyard camping in latest Time. Thunder rumblings to our southwest. There was a 30 percent chance of showers but since I washed the car I'm sure the percentages have gone up dramatically. We should switch cars if we are going to run errands.

Plants 'seen doing quantum physics'

The idea that plants make use of quantum physics to harvest light more efficiently has received a boost.

Plants gather packets of light called photons, shuttling them deep into their cells where their energy is converted with extraordinary efficiency.

A report in Science journal adds weight to the idea that an effect called a "coherence" helps determine the most efficient path for the photons.

Experts have called the work "a nice proof" of some contentious ideas.

Prior work has shown weaker evidence that these coherences existed in relatively large samples from plants.

But the new study has been done painstakingly, aiming lasers at single molecules of the light-harvesting machinery to show how light is funnelled to the so-called reaction centres within plants where light energy is converted into chemical energy.

What has surprised even the researchers behind the research is not only that these coherences do indeed exist, but that they also seem to change character, always permitting photons to take the most efficient path into the reaction centres.

Until very recently, quantum mechanics - a frequently arcane branch of physics most often probed in laboratory settings at the coldest temperatures and lowest pressures - would not have been expected in biological settings.

The fact that plants and animals are extremely warm and soft by comparison would suggest that delicate quantum states should disappear in living things, leaving behaviour explicable by the more familiar "classical physics" that is taught in school.

But the new results join the ranks of a field that seems finally to be gaining ground: quantum biology.

'Something shocking'

Niek van Hulst of the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Castelldefels, Spain, and colleagues studied the light-harvesting complexes of purple bacteria to address the question.

These are literally like antennas that gather up light, and are arranged like adjacent rings.

When laser light is shone on just one isolated ring, some of it is re-released in the form of what is called fluorescence.

But what the team saw is that over time, that amount of fluorescence rose and fell - a sign that the energy was coming and going elsewhere: a coherence.

This is linked to the quantum mechanical notion of a "superposition": that a particle can effectively be in multiple places at once - or try multiple paths simultaneously.

"What you see here is this photon comes in, and it sees many energy pathways," explained Prof van Hulst.

"Where does it go? It goes to the one that's most efficient, the one where this quantum effect tells you it has the highest probability (of being put to use)," he told BBC News.

But the soft, flexible, warm conditions at room temperature mean that, as things move and jiggle - as life tends to do - that most efficient path can change. Remarkably, so did the evident path along the rings.

"Nature is very robust at keeping this up no matter what happens - this for me is something shocking," Prof van Hulst continued.

"The result is that this fluffy stuff at room temperature where everything is variable, it just works - with an efficiency of 90%: way, way better than any solar cell we can make ourselves."

'Several questions'

Rienk van Grondelle of the Free University Amsterdam called the work "a very nice proof that the ideas that existed about these coherences are actually correct".

"The system is able to overcome this problem by sampling two or three of those pathways at the same time and simply use the one that is best - I think it's very, very beautiful," he told BBC News.

Other researchers are less convinced. Daniel Turner of the University of Toronto has been working on similar problems and says that the study's primary proof - the comings and goings of the fluorescence - are "not necessarily directly relevant to how photosynthesis works in natural conditions".

"There are still several questions regarding how the results of this and other… measurements of highly purified protein extracts relate to the natural sunlight conditions experienced by photosynthetic organisms," he told BBC News.

Even the notion of what is meant by "quantum effects" in relation to biology, he said, was still up for debate.

But for Prof van Grondelle, the paper is another impressive addition to this debate.

"Of course (the acceptance of quantum effects in biology) is not going to come from one single paper," he said.

"It will take more evidence, and maybe more elaborate evidence that this is really happening. But this is how science goes."

         What you would like to see as plausible is the concept you are using in the story (similar quantum physics in thought and light). The environmental edge of the universe; a doorway to the beyond via quantum connections may be plausible. This would allow for me, Amorella, to possibly be a naturally existing separate non-physical consciousness (at least in a fiction).

         That isn't my thought exactly, but it is clearer than my own present thinking.

         1623 hours. Summer solstice. My Grandma Schick used to say, "Winter's coming," on such a date as this. She was a pretty good long-range forecaster, that's for sure. Four trees were taken out today and one in back was topped. Those that I thought were eighty feet turned out to be sixty. Par for the course as Carol would say. My use of hyperbole is pretty well known when making conversation. I've mentioned this before so any readers out there with any sense have been forewarned.

         This sort of admission is always embarrassing to you because in your youth storytelling used to get you into trouble. Most of the day was spent focused on the workers and their equipment and the art of tree cutting. You are at Pine Hill Lakes Park, far north lot facing west; Carol is taking a shaded walk through the north woods. It has been and still is an arthritic day with a new focus on a very sore left shoulder. It reminds you of days in the fifties in Little League when you were a pitcher for the below average team called "Supermen". - Amorella

         That's a long ago thought, but yes, that is what it feels like, only it would have been my right shoulder. We didn't have a very good team and my efforts I'm sure didn't help matters. We did have fun though and my grandfather, Popo Orndorff used to take me and one of my friends to Cincinnati once a year to see the Reds play at the old Crosley Field. Crosley was still a big name in Cincinnati in those days. Driving down SR 42 from Columbus there was always the sight of the WLW Radio Tower -- we passed right by it on the way to and from Cincinnati. I was always interested in radio broadcasting even in my earliest days. I guess because Mom had it on for the war news and background music when her record player wasn't playing.

The Crosley Broadcasting Corporation was a radio and television broadcaster founded by radio manufacturing pioneer Powell Crosley, Jr. The company was an early operator of radio stations in the United States. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Crosley's flagship station was WLW(AM). Most of its broadcast properties adopted call signs in which the first three letters were "WLW", which stood for " the World's Largest Warehouse". By the 1950s, the company would operate a small television network in the eastern Midwest.

History

During World War II, Crosley built the Bethany Relay Station in Butler County, Ohio's Union Township [now Westchester Township], one mile west of its transmitter for WLW, for the Office of War Information. It operated as many as five shortwave stations, using the call signs WLWK, WLWL, WLWO, WLWR and WLWS. It operated the facility for the government until 1963.

In 1945, the Crosley interests were purchased by Aviation Corporation. The radio and appliance-manufacturing arm changed its name to Avco, but the broadcast operations continued to operate under the Crosley name until they adopted the Avco name in 1968.

Crosley (Avco) also owned WLWF, an FM station it operated along with its WLWC (now WCMH-TV). In 1959, the station was sold to Taft Broadcasting, owner of WTVN-TV also in Columbus (now WSYX-TV. The transaction was the first in Ohio broadcasting history where a broadcast owner sold one of its stations to a competitor in the same city. The FM station is now WLVQ-FM.

From the 1950s through the 1970s, Crosley operated a small television network in which programs were produced at one of its stations and broadcast on the other Crosley stations in the Midwest, and occasionally by non-Crosley stations as well. The company occasionally produced programs picked up for broadcast on either NBC or DuMont. Programs which aired nationally included NBC's Midwestern Hayride (on which Rosemary Clooney [George Clooney's aunt] often performed) and Breakfast Party. Other programs originated on the Crosley network included DuMont's The Paul Dixon Show and The Ruth Lyons 50-50 Club. The Phil Donahue Show started in 1967, originating from WLWD in Dayton, Ohio. The Jerry Springer Show started from WLWT in Cincinnati and was distributed nationwide by its syndication division, Multimedia Entertainment.

In 1968, Avco, which had just purchased Embassy Pictures, consolidated its television operations into Avco Embassy Television.

Beginning in 1975, Avco sold all of its broadcasting holdings. In 1975, it sold WLWC-TV in Columbus, WLWI-TV in Indianapolis, WOAI-AM/FM/TV in San Antonio (the AM station was sold to the nascent Clear Channel as the chain's second property), and WWDC-AM/FM in Washington D.C.; in 1976, it sold WLW-AM and WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, WLWD-TV in Dayton, and its Avco Embassy Television and Avco Embassy Program Sales divisions; in 1977, it sold KYA-AM/FM in San Francisco and WRTH-AM in Wood River-St. Louis.

The closest equivalent to a "successor" to Avco Broadcasting was Multimedia, Inc., to whom Avco sold flagship TV station WLWT, as well as Avco Embassy Television and Avco Embassy Program Sales in 1976. In December 1995, Gannett (who owned former Crosley station WXIA-TV in Atlanta) acquired Multimedia, Inc., while the respective syndication division was acquired by MCA Universal. By 1997, all of the original Crosley radio and television properties had been sold off by its successor companies, with the exception of WTHR in Indianapolis, which is still owned by an affiliate of the Dispatch Broadcast Group.

By the 1970s the Crosley name had ceased to exist in the memory of most US citizens (as would that of its major successor company, Avco, a decade later); but many of the "WLW-" station call-letters persist (see below). The deserted ruins of the major Crosley manufacturing facility can still be seen on the west side of I-75, just north of the area where the Cincinnati Museum Center (previously the Union Terminal train station) is currently located and near where Crosley Field once stood. The impressively huge transmission tower and old 50,000 watt transmitter at the Tylersville Road facility near U.S. Route 42 (Reading Rd.), between Dayton and Cincinnati still exists.

         There was a lot going on during and after WWII. Dayton's National Cash Register and Wright Patterson Air Force Base have had their own high tech connections with gathering worldwide intelligence since before those heady days of WWII right up to today. Growing up, such matters made an impression on this boy and adolescent.  We were not in the center of it all like New York City, but the area is up to something. On the other side, coming down from Delaware the other day vast stretches of corn and soy beans fields are at different levels of growth depending on planting times. It is nice to be able to drive five miles north or east and see farms and fields and woods and streams. I am so glad I had the opportunities of seeing and being a small part of my great aunt and uncle's farm life first hand from the ages of four to sixteen. Bits and pieces of an older world and I gained from the insight.

         Fortunately, none of this blog or Merlyn books are required reading. Memories clothe the present world, dress it up a bit, like when a young child puts on Daddy's or Mommy's shoes to play dress up. Not much difference from what I see in here. Post. - Amorella

         Late mid-morning. You watched the boys feed the ducks at Pine Hill Lakes Park and are now in the shade in the car. Carol, Kim and the boys are at the playground equipment. The warmth is creeping up. - Amorella

         I remember talking about the warmth back in the late eighties. The question was: "Is it going to get colder or warmer, orndorff?" and I said, "Warmer" It was something such. (1044)

         You are mistaken, boy. I, Amorella, said it was going to become warmer in reference to climate change; you asked the question like I was the function of a mystical-like letter board.

         We are having an early supper at McD's on Kings Mill less than a mile from Kings Island. One quarter pounder deluxe free with the purchase of another, plus dollar drinks any size, including ice coffee, to you and Carol that's a good deal, plus the sandwiches were good with fresh ingredients. - Amorella

         1720 hours. Governments should be as efficient as McDonalds, and they don't slack on service either, plenty of people in the fray providing those services, at least at this McD. Kim and the boys left early afternoon after leftovers for lunch. We stopped for another sale, no doubt less well known. Graeter's had sodas on sale for less the three dollars, as today is national soda day. This is something one just has to know, as there is little to no advertising. Carol is on page 186 of her Gibbs and Duffy book. Owen came out with an interesting comparison today (he is into lawn mowers presently) -- "I have a statement. Lawn mowers are dangerous; hot like a waffle and sharp like a knife." No one could argue and Kim said this comment was a first, 'out of the blue'.  Kim has been working on the differences between statements and questions; I have added that statements are either true or false (made up). He gets the idea. Love to watch people absorb words and their meanings. Most awesome. I loved it as a kid and love it still. Kim gave me her AP English class notes to keep because I wanted to remember what we did. She can work the logic in as the boys grow. There is nothing wrong with promoting a little reason early on.

         No. I deleted some material I wrote about those letters to an unknown rabbi back in 1988 because it seems impolite to go into a matter that was not addressed to me to begin with. What was said is really none of my business and I sent the original notes accordingly.

         This came up because I mentioned that I, Amorella, had said the climate was going to become warmer not colder and a few other statements that later turned out to be correct. - Amorella

         You did. I have not forgotten. I don't like to dwell on it. Water long over the dam as people say. I don't like thinking too much about psi.
