Mid-afternoon. A walk in the woods earlier, a trip to the doctor, lunch at Potbelly’s, and presently at Barnes and Noble in Kenwood. While on the walk you were thinking about the old fellow you and Carol used to stop and chat with at the park. He was a volunteer who collected for fishing permits and the like, and his name was Frank Bailey. He died this Spring probably while you were in Cleveland. You wonder if sometimes the Dead stick around for a while, lingering before making the final commitment to move on.
I do wonder about such things, I have since upper elementary school days. To me it has to be a matter of physics as well as metaphysics, a combination of this world and the next. It is either that or speculation, imagination and/or coincidence. I know I have written about such experiences. Grandma once had a small ghostly spirit from one of the ocean’s islands in her hand if I remember right – one of Grandma’s Stories. I wish there were better analogies for better understanding in my fictions written by you Amorella. Human beings are limited more by words than anything else. How does one explain a metaphysical concept in our modern day. We have invented thousands upon thousands of scientific words but when it comes to the world of the Betweener (in the books) I am not sure. I know in book four you, Amorella, take the part of the Supervisor, who in my mind is at least angelic-like. And, although angelic-like is ‘beyond’ at Betweener there is an establishment of ideas/concepts already. What about the ‘true’ Betweener though, a being able to adapt in both the visible and invisible worlds. I am assuming here that in concept this would be a place a human spirit could reside for a time, a ghost, if you will, but a natural ghost, not a supernatural ghost. The focus would seem to be on awareness of one’s environment. Which of the four, earth, air, fire or water would be the element for most comfortable environment? What would be the elements of the invisible worlds? Which of these elements would be a more stable environment for the Dead, which would be more stable for a Betweener? How does one navigate the said environments? How is a Betweener created? What separates a Betweener from a Faery, an imaginary creature for instance? And, is consciousness a form of matter similar to that of light? Are there tunnels or bridges from one to the other? What would be the best analogy that the reader, a human being, can develop an identity with?
This would be interesting to incorporate into the stories, something within reason first and imagination second. Maybe even in chapter six, though I don’t have a clue how that would be done. What do you think, Amorella?
As Carol is about to pay for some books, let’s save this to later. You may post it now, however, - Amorella.
You are home, relaxed after taking Jadah to Mason Family Pets to get her nails clipped and anal sac expressed. First time to this vet and you are positive towards it as they got you in and out pleasantly fast, with less expense than other nearby veterinarian offices you have been to with a cat.
As for one of your earlier questions, the element most closest used in analogy would be ‘water’, at least for our purposes here.
This is interesting Amorella in that I was just thinking that I forgot to include the fifth element which would actually be the closest element from my reckoning, and you pop up with water. Of the four I would have thought air would be closest because it is invisible and breathe is associated with soul and spirit, at least this is how I remember it.
Water is already used in the story, the individual earthly human spirit ‘swims’ to Elysium. It is also used for the Dead being distributed into a variety of common cultures for comfort. There is no reason to throw out the dishwater, orndorff.
That makes sense. So, what is the connecting element that the Betweener would more easily fit in?
Light. Water and light will do here. Such as light reflected into the water. Let’s look for an appropriate photo to download and use for your wordy example.
You have downloaded material relating to underwater photography and several photos for example, about eight pages worth of notes and photos. This is good for now. Post. Later, dude. – Amorella.
You and Carol enjoyed “Lie to Me” and “The Closer” tonight and you want to include today’s Word of the Day from Merriam-Webster. Here it is:
The Word of the Day for July 19 is:
Barmecidal adjective: providing only the illusion of abundance
Example sentence:
The tax rebate is a Barmecidal windfall, coming as it does in the wake of new
hidden taxes on consumer goods and services.
Did you know?
"Barmecide" is the name of a family of princes in a tale from The Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment). One prince in the family torments a beggar by inviting him to a fabulous feast, at which all the dishes are imaginary. The poor man plays along with his malicious host, pretending to get drunk on the imaginary wine; he then gets even by knocking down the patronizing royal.
I like the word. It reminds me of how the Dead have food and drink among friends. They play along for the companionship offered at the table. Among the Dead it is far more important than real food which is no longer a need for survival. How would it be to be free of food and drink and air and gravity? I think it would be grand.
Let’s include a photo shot here as an example of the world of the Betweener whether a character of that realm or a passing human spirit.

Your short bit of research shows you word choice for describing such photography. Depending on the surface light changes underwater. The strength of the light also has an effect as do undulations, crinkle patterns effects from surface to ocean bottom as seen in the above photo. Think of the scattering of the light through the water as the scattering of consciousness that rests and gathers itself on the sea floor. The shadow of the sting ray, the shadow of a true Betweener. That should get you started. The rest fits within physics, at least I’ll make it fit for this fiction. – Amorella.
Thank you, Amorella. This does give me a framework for thought and analogy.
Tomorrow, back to working on chapter five audio draft. – Amorella.
