Notes - You see where you are. / an anachronism?

You are at Kroger’s on Tylersville after a late lunch at Chipotle/Panera. Earlier you and Carol both took walks in the park – you continued from your regular pattern to beyond the west lake and more than half way down the south lake before turning around. Once home you both worked in the yard before heading to lunch.

1441 hours. I chatted with Tim about Hemingway’s Nick Adams recovering from war at “Big Two-Hearted River” as he had a third of his classes fly fishing today. The others were sitting in outdoor chairs working on their journals. He began his “Words of the Wilds” class fifteen or so years ago. He is best suited to teach it. Tim King has been and is one of Mason’s most knowledgeable naturalists.

You are thinking on how being a naturalist was one of Merlyn’s forte as were most of the druids before and after his time.

1452 hours. I can’t help but think of Jesus as a druid of sorts. Some druids thought of his as such because he was a carpenter, thus a woodworker. I think it was St. Columba who thought such. Checking on Wikipedia Offline I cannot see any verification of this however. I read it somewhere and of course it could have been hearsay. This may be more of the fiction about Jesus than the man himself. The man appears to have been well used by many people. Perhaps I am being more cynical than I should be. I’d better be careful myself, otherwise I will as guilty as I suspect many others have been. Hmm. The concept of capitalism may have had its start in religious adventures before it was molded into an economic system. Daresay I could have been burned at the stake for such a thought not more than a few centuries ago. It is a thought that’s all. I wonder if there has ever been research on the subject?

The groceries have been put away and you are parked in the far north Pine Hill Lakes lot. Carol is picking up trash and you continued thinking about capitalism in any religion past or present, i.e. the selling of the church in search of a prophet was your last thought – you thought it a funny line but then were concerned on it being sacrilegious. You consider people to be capitalistic by nature and cannot think of how this is usable with the marsupial humanoids. – Amorella

1554 hours. That reminds me, I need to change their structure slightly to be half primate, half marsupial because their bodies are so similar to humans, especially with their clothes on, that is, earth culture styled clothes. I remember it was some time in the late eighties I got the idea of marsupial humanoids and I did a lot of research at the time but it was more general. Anyway, there have been several species of humanoids on this planet so it appears reasonable enough.

You want to account for the marsupial humanoids both in biological and social growth, but it is not just social growth I am leaning towards, it is spiritual growth also. – Amorella

1604 hours. I understand this but I don’t have any dynamics on the ‘beginning’ of spirit and how it would grow because I still think of spirit as in Before, as it were, that is timeless and therefore how would it grow if it is already matured?

The humane spirit (in the Merlyn books) is not developed fully because the human species has not developed enough to accept its fuller potentials. – Amorella

1623 hours. We are home. As I sat down envisioned a chart following that of the angelic hierarchy according to the medieval Catholic Church. If respect cannot be measured then how can one’s humanity be measured; if the assumed heartansoulanmind can’t be measured, then what of humanity?

Do you mean politeness and kindness in terms of respect? Do you mean weathering societies as families are weathered? – Amorella

1633 hours. I assume justice is weathered also? Amorella, this cannot be done. Politeness and kindness as well as respect can be witnessed first-hand but it cannot be put on a ten-point scale.

In here how about using two divisions, satisfactory or unsatisfactory? – Amorella

This sounds like my Master’s thesis. I did not like it because if one did really good work sheorhe still got a satisfactory. I did not seem fair or just. It still is not fair or just. Then an S+ would creep in as well as an S-. I am not ready to accept this most everyone having the same grade when some will naturally do more work than others.

You mean being paid by the hour for the amount of work one does or does not complete? – Amorella

1641 hours. That’s right. Plus, you have experience on the job and administrative duties beyond the normal. If one is responsible for more then sheorhe is entitled to a greater share of the pie. This is the way the system works.

What if it is not the way the marsupial humanoid system works? – Amorella

Humans would not like that very much. Everyone having the same yearly salary? Are you kidding? That would never work here.

It doesn’t. It works there on ThreePlanets. – Amorella

It is a flight of fantasy Amorella. I don’t want to go there any further than is already explained in the published trilogy. It was a ridiculous piece of satire, that was the point, very dark humor from someone, myself, playing the part of old Benjamin in Animal Farm. Old Ben knew what happened to the old horses. I am tired of this Amorella. I need to get busy with something I feel akin to – chapter twelve. I need to take a nap. (1652)

I am sorry, Amorella. I cannot write something without reason being involved. I cannot understand something I cannot realize.

You see where you are. - Amorella

You both had like snacks for supper as you watched NBC and ABC News, The Mentalist, Unforgettable and tonight’s Bones.

2223 hours. During Bones I found a pint of Graeter’s black cherry chocolate chip in the freezer. I had between a fourth and third of the pint in a small mug. I can still taste it. I should not have eaten it because I don’t remember ever eating Graeter’s at home. I probably did but it was decades ago. It feels odd that I can taste it at home and it is strangely disconcerting like it is an anachronism; eating Graeters out of its proper place and time. I can still taste the extraordinary chocolate while sitting in my favorite chair in the living room. How odd is that?

Which of the semi-main characters in the Merlyn books is an anachronism? – Amorella

2232 hours. I didn’t know there was one. First, the setting is in dreams. How could any dream be out of its proper time or out of its proper place?  Here is what Wikipedia says.

** **
Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.
Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep—when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. REM sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. At times, dreams may occur during other stages of sleep. However, these dreams tend to be much less vivid or memorable.
The length of a dream can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes. People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has three to five dreams per night, but some may have up to seven dreams in one night. The dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full eight-hour night sleep, most dreams occur in the typical two hours of REM.
In modern times, dreams have been seen as a connection to the unconscious mind. They range from normal and ordinary to overly surreal and bizarre. Dreams can have varying natures, such as frightening, exciting, magical, melancholic, adventurous, or sexual. The events in dreams are generally outside the control of the dreamer, with the exception of lucid dreaming, where the dreamer is self-aware. Dreams can at times make a creative thought occur to the person or give a sense of inspiration.
Opinions about the meaning of dreams have varied and shifted through time and culture. The earliest recorded dreams were acquired from materials dating back approximately 5000 years, in Mesopotamia, where they were documented on clay tablets. In the Greek and Roman periods, the people believed that dreams were direct messages from one and/or multiple deities, from deceased persons, and that they predicted the future. Some cultures practiced dream incubation with the intention of cultivating dreams that are of prophecy.
Sigmund Freud, who developed the discipline of psychoanalysis, wrote extensively about dream theories and their interpretations in the early 1900s. He explained dreams as manifestations of our deepest desires and anxieties, often relating to repressed childhood memories or obsessions. In The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), Freud developed a psychological technique to interpret dreams and devised a series of guidelines to understand the symbols and motifs that appear in our dreams.

I should include the first reference I found also because I am looking for characteristics of dreams. The author has an undergraduate and graduate degree, which is all I have so I think Wikipedia is the better article.

Characteristics of Dreams

5 Major Dream Characteristics
By Kendra Cherry
•
Dreams have fascinated artists, philosophers and researchers for thousands of years. However, it was not until fairly recently in history that dreams became the subject of serious scientific study. While dreams can vary considerably, sleep researcher J. Allan Hobson (1988) identified five basic characteristics of dreams:

1. Dreams Often Feature Intense Emotions
One of the major characteristics of dreams is that the emotions experienced in dreams can be intense, painful and acute. People commonly report dreaming about deeply embarrassing situations (i.e. being nude in public) or profoundly terrifying events (i.e. being chased by an attacker). In some instances, these emotions can become so intense that they interrupt the dream or cause the dreamer to wake abruptly. The three most common emotions that become intensified by dreams are anxiety, fear and surprise (Hobson, 7).

2. Dreams Are Frequently Disorganized and Illogical
Dreams are full of discontinuities, ambiguities and inconsistency, but sometimes these things can lead to downright bizarre dream content. According to Hobson (4), one of the hallmarks of dreams is "illogical content and organization, in which the unities of time, place and person do not apply, and natural laws are disobeyed." Some examples of illogical dream content includes flying, time travel, talking animals, sudden transformations of both people and objects and sudden shifts in setting.

3. Strange Dream Content Is Accepted Without Question
The odd events and content that occur in dreams are typically accepted without question by the dreaming mind. According to Hobson, the unquestioning acceptance of dream content is due to the strength of our internally generated emotions and perceptions ("Dreaming," 5). Within the dream, these strange and illogical events, perceptions and objects are not seen as being out of place. If the dream is remembered upon waking, the content of the dream is seen as odd or even difficult to explain.

4. People Often Experience Bizarre Sensations
Strange sensory experiences are another cardinal characteristic of dreams. The sensation of falling, an inability to move quickly and being unable to control body movements are just a few of the commonly reported sensory experiences that occur during dreams.

5. Dreams Are Difficult to Remember
While memory seems to be intensified within the context of the dream, access to the information contained within the dream diminishes rapidly once the dreamer wakes. Dream researchers estimate that approximately 95% of all dreams are forgotten entirely upon awakening.

Understanding the Characteristics of Dreams
While many people may familiar with these five common characteristics of dreams, some may be unaware of just how common these experiences are. "Dream characteristics and dream object may be of an everyday nature or altogether fantastic and impossible collages of existing reality; they may behave normally or indulge in the most absurd, improbable or impossible actions in settings either familiar or bearing only the faintest resemblances to those of real life," Hobson explains.

Between both articles I don’t see anything that relates to a Merlyn character being or relating to an anachronism. I don’t get the point. If anything I sometimes feel these segmented chapter dreams are ‘auto suggested’ by you Amorella and I stir the pot. Or, I auto suggest the setting, characters, plot, theme and conclusion. I don’t see anything out of its proper place or time outside of Merlyn and perhaps you Amorella, as you sometimes play a character in the books. (2315)
