Busy morning and early afternoon running errands (Carol’s Christmas present which she immediately opened) and petite (seven pound, six oz.) Jadah’s yearly shot and check-up. More errands and a second stop at the post box to drop off Christmas cards this time. Long lines and full parking lot both times. Nearing supper and you are tired from the day’s activities so far.
Christmas week is full of stress for one day when there isn’t much stress. Most of the joy comes from watching kids opening presents because I remember how it was as a kid doing so. Very exciting except for opening presents like clothes or shoes and the like. Owen is too young, even next year I think he will be too young but by the time he is three Halloween and Christmas will have their ‘kids’ meanings – good, fun freebees. October Faeries or December Elves – a kid never knows how it is going to be when the gifts are freely given. Yet, the adults preach to the kids that there is no free lunch, which of course their usually isn’t, and when there actually is a free lunch everyone is suspect. Such is life in the modern U.S.A.
This is what would make it tough on intelligently empathetic other-worldly aliens in real life. What if they could give the world a free lunch so to speak and kick our cultures up ten thousand years in a single generation? Our species, in my view, would have far too much pride to take advantage of it. In fact, doing it our way, we would find ways to fully exploit their advanced culture for our own self gratification. Back to the Native Americans, that is those on both of our continents.
Time to stop, orndorff. No one wants to hear your ranting, well, some might, but I don’t. You come off no better than the exploiters from my view. First, don’t you think the would be aliens would have thought of that? Besides, if they have empathy then they are probably a similar species and would have exploited themselves for generations and generations. Humans would have their many interpretation and expectations from such an event, and I think it would be much more reflective (on the humans’ part) if they realized this would be a one time event only, for thousands and thousands of years.
I hadn’t thought of that.
After supper and two more hours of pre-Christmas ‘chores’ you have had a chance to think on my proposal.
I have. For one, I am reminded on 2001 A Space Odyssey and how aliens had left something there to be discovered by humans, so I assume that is where this is coming from. I like the basic idea though because in book six this could be something the marsupial-humanoids from the first three books could do somehow with the mysterious aid from their Dead and the human Dead. I can see how something like this would work as a subplot or a sub subplot. I like the idea of a sophisticated medical technology (the main gifting focus on basic human health and welfare) and then leaving us to our own devices to modify this technology into space exploration and food services and all other basic human services. That way our pride could be salvaged – the aliens showing that they have confidence that we can find our own way by accepting this challenge. Plus, tremendous social knowledge could be read from their histories, governments and biology and perhaps some of their early space explorations. We would then be able to absorb new concepts and new ideas at our own pace. I feel very positive for such a hopeful (within confines of the books) plausible theme.
