Early afternoon. Busy with Brennan in the morning, while he napped you and Carol split a take out lunch from Stone Oven on Lee at the Shaker Lake Park; then a stop at Heinen’s near Cedar and Green for chicken salad and condiments for supper.
A delightfully warm summer day without the oppressive heat of last week, which was great for our earlier car-seated picnic in the shade. This was especially so as Brennan slept calmly after being fussbudget most of the morning. Tonight Kim and Paul have a realtor stopping by to add some pointers about either selling or renting in the early spring. He has awakened and it is time for food.
1405 hours. I was just thinking on shape and use of soul when it dawned on me that this is the same as form and function. I cannot believe this did not ‘click’ earlier. Reminds me of one of my favorite fun early assignments in ‘expository writing’ class at Indian Hill. “Describe the form and function of a paper clip in approximately 1000 words.” [I am thinking 500 for the form and 500 for the function. It is far better to write too much than too little. Be significantly specific.]
Dr. Harold Hancock, head of the History Department at Otterbein College [now University] was one of my favorite teachers along with Dr. John Coulter, head of the Department of English. Dr. Hancock would also tie on the “It is better to write too much than too little. Be significantly specific!” beneath his essay questions. He was an intelligent and witty professor; always enjoyable in class. He was also one of the advisors to our local fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi (Country Club). We exchanged Christmas cards (with a note or two) up until the year he died – wonderful fellow, Dr. Hancock. He and Dr. Coulter are still missed by the plebian likes of me.
You are digressing into memory alone, boy. Come up to the present then post. - Amorella
