The Marlin Company

"The Four Most Important Words in the English Language"

By Frank Kenna
J.W. Marriott was interviewed in the Sunday, May 26 NY Times.  The entire interview is well worth reading from a manager’s perspective, but there was one quote in particular that I would like to share with you:
“The four most important words in the English language are, ‘What do you think?’ Listen to your people and learn.”
I like this because so often business communicators think of communication as a “me to them” process and ignore the return loop.  Marriott makes the point that listening is actually more important.  After all, it’s our employees who are on the front lines, have the most contact with customers and therefore the best field intelligence with which to make decisions.

0957 hours. I like the "What do you think?" If it can be worked in at the conclusion or near the conclusion of Brothers 21 I'd like to go for it, that is, if it can be made to fit in context.

How do you know that it isn't already in the cards, so to speak, to conclude Brothers 21? - Amorella

It didn't dawn on me that it was or could be.

What else is new? - Amorella

The more I think on this little circumstance the more humor I see; some darker than others, but it is humor nevertheless.

Not a bad way to start a Monday morning, boy. Post. - Amorella

1012 hours. I had a flash memory from my junior or senior year of high school (1958-1960). We had an assembly on 'safe driving' and the speaker was a likeable fellow who had won the Indianapolis 500 in 1950.

Johnnie Woodrow Parsons (July 4, 1918 – September 8, 1984) was an American race car driver from Los Angeles, California who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1950.
Parsons had the dubious distinction of being the only Indianapolis 500 winner to have his name misspelled on the Borg-Warner Trophy.. Silversmiths carved "Johnny" instead of "Johnnie." He had a son named Johnny who competed at Indy a dozen times.

What I remember was his talking about hitting a brick wall at a high rate of speed. He said that what happened after and before was all about physics. That was the beginning, I think, of my focus on the existential elements of physics. It hit home enough that I even remembered the man's name, stage presence and soft-spoken manner after all this time.

Carol is ironing and you are wondering how to get rid of the Body-Solid 1700S Home Gym you have in the basement. You called the Veterans but they won't take anything that you need two men to carry out. You could try Goodwill or All About Sports. - Amorella

Amazing. I never knew you to respond to something such as this. (1258)

You are giving something away, orndorff. When you give something away I show interest. - Amorella

Goodwill will not pick it up but College Hunks Hauling Junk will and as it is a donation to Goodwill we get ten percent off. That sounds reasonable to me and I am taking the money to pay for the removal from my stash fund. Shoot, if I were a college kid I'd just take the gym home and use it. Why not?

This would not bother you? - Amorella

Not really, as long as it is being used what difference does it make. I've tried to give it away just for getting it out of the basement but no one is interested.

You are stopping for lunch. Later, dude. Post. - Amorella

[The blog is not printing correctly, sorry.]

Late mid-afternoon. You are back from MicroCenter after purchasing your Audio-technica Solid Bass ATH-WS55 over the ear headphones.

1653 hours. I am just trying them out. Best headphones I have ever had. I have spent a couple of days researching for the best headphones under a hundred dollars and so far they are quite good. My experience does not range to excellent because I don't know what that is in reference to headphone quality and technology. I'll have to wear them for an hour or so to see how comfortable they are then but right now they are much more comfortable than the ten year old Sony over the ear, but then they were twenty-nine or thirty dollars, these were three times that. These hopefully will last my lifetime (which is much easier the older I become).

Later than dusk. You have been working on updating both TomTom GPS machines and are still in the process of one of them. Post. -  Amorella

2124 hours. Perhaps I can do some work when this is last update is complete. It is taking longer than I expected it to.
