Dusk is an hour earlier today. Mid-day, you
and Carol took in a Sunday matinee, "Victoria and Abdul". Dame Judy
Dench is the star and played the same role of Queen Victoria as she did in
"Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown". - Amorella
2202 hours. There is a kind human arrogance at work in first setting an
official time, then official time zones around the world; and after that,
deciding to just arbitrarily changing an hour either up or back depending on
how much daylight we want. When young I wondered how this could be that people
can change official time at will. I remember that as a lad of about ten I asked
my grandfather, "How can Ohio have one summer time while farmers have
another?" He laughed and replied, "Milk cows have their own sense of
time and farmers have to milk them on cow time." I can remember the smile
he got on his face before laughing. I think he was surprised that I didn't know
about cow time. He had been a milkman for most of his life and he had let me in
on a little secret about cows. I had never seen a cow clock in my entire young
life and I had visited a few barns in Central Ohio. Most barns had a clock that
told human time, and if they didn't have a clock they had a radio set to the
farm station 700 WLW-radio in Cincinnati. That radio always seemed to be on
when Uncle Doc was milking cows. Someone told the time on the radio and it
became clearer to me that the cows knew what time it was by way of the radio
announcer. After all, the cows listened to Uncle Doc he was always talking to them
and patting them friendly-like they were pets. That's what I thought, cow time
was a secret between the radio voice and Uncle Doc's voice, but the cows never
talked. No need to do so, that's what I thought. I had forgotten about that
secret of cow time. I never told anyone about it, but when I would pet a cow
like Uncle Doc I knew the cow knew I knew and we had a special friendship. That's
how I remember it. (2225)
