Notes - Pouch 21 preliminaries / oh the irony, the irony ;-)

Early afternoon. Today's project was to begin to rid the English ivy at the north side of the house. You like the ivy, but it is evasive and has become out of control so out it comes in a couple stages of Round Up first, wait a couple of days; another spray of Round Up, wait a couple of days then pull out the roots. Then another spray of Round Up, wait three days then plant new grow, probably pachysandra. You were going to use stronger Round Up but nothing will grow for up to four months with that chemical mix.

1326 hours. I am ready to work on Pouch 21. This is very exciting. I am sure there are plenty of mixed feelings and thoughts as Pyl, Justin and Blake are readying themselves. I assume this will be the focus.

It will. The only evidence of the marsupial humanoids will be the words from Friendly as they enter the main control room. The last sentence of Pouch 21 will be: "Welcome aboard." - Amorella

This is so much fun. What a time to imagine and to immerse myself in through the characters.

I suggest you take one character at a time and come up with about 200 words of heart thoughts then we can splice them together with a quick introduction and drop in the quick conclusion. Then we be done with the preliminaries of Great Merlyn's Ghost, Volume One, boy. - Amorella\

         Wow. Two hundred words each.

The deepest felt mixed with the strongest thoughts. - Amorella

How long are they going to be gone?

They don't know. Up to a year. - Amorella

How are they going to be accepted by ThreePlanets under the conditions Friendly and crew have put themselves in?

They don't know, other than Yermey has two plans and a vow of "No Running". Stand Your Ground is something they have learn to accept being on earth for six months. - Amorella

This doesn't bide well. It is hard to believe the Earthlings are going along with this.

What would you do, boy? - Amorella

Now, this is something to think on.

         Good. Post. - Amorella

You had a very late lunch at Cracker Barrel and are presently at the nearby Barnes and Noble's where Carol is looking at books -- Rowling's The Casual Vacancy; Meltzer's Fifth Assassin and Grisham's The Racketeer.

You watched the news and "Rizzoli and Isles". As you look out the front window the evidence is that it is dusk but you would like to think it is an hour early, 28 June rather than 28 August. Thinking this will do you some help you researched the human emotions. What are you planning to do find four separate ones for each character with about fifty words for each emotion and write in accordingly? - Amorella

2022 hours. Sounds pretty desperate. I hadn't really thought that far ahead. I want each character to have different emotions though. Why would they have the same ones?

When you and Carol went off on your two year working adventure to Brazil, don't you think you had some of the same emotions? - Amorella

I wasn't thinking about Brazil. We're talking the same planet here. We could be back in the States at any time within 24 hours. It didn't seem that far away.

So there you are, a concern. You are going to be gone for up to a year with no chance of coming home. - Amorella

I don't think that would be a bother. I would be concerned about missing my friends and family. We came home after a year anyway because Carol's parents would be visiting back in the States from India for a month. Dave and Marsha loaned us one of their cars for our month stay. Everyone had a good time. Craig, Alta and Jim came to Brazil at Christmas for a couple of weeks. We all had a good time then too. I don't know, these days a year goes pretty fast. I don't think it would be that bad to be gone from the planet for a year.

What would be your main concern as you left? - Amorella

2032 hours. I don't know. You can walk across the street any day of the week and get killed in an accident. The way Ship is set up I figure I would be safer from accidents on Ship or ThreePlanets than here. I would want to be reading up on their culture and society and try to learn a few basic phrases in case I got lost. I would assume that if the trip is going to be free I could at least exchange the cash equivalent for a year or take a loan of some kind so that we would be able to meet expenses while we were there. Being a guest on Ship is one thing but once on ThreePlanets we would want to pay our own way. In the book all three could afford to take out for a years salary to pay for our necessities. No one would want handouts. That wouldn't be right.

What would be the response of Friendly, Hartolite and Yermey to this perspective? - Amorella

I don't know but there is no way, if I had the money, that I wouldn't pay my own way (if I could afford it) once I arrived at ThreePlanets. These three people have enough money in investments, savings, and inheritance to pay. That's the way it is going to be Amorella. I would not want to be beholden to the marsupial humanoids for living free for a year.

What if they could arrange that you three work as building a communications bridge between the two planetary cultures? - Amorella

I suppose something could be worked out -- a contract just like we had overseas. But the three could not guarantee a contract -- it would have to be written and accepts by the ThreePlanet's government. They don't even have to allow Ship to land. Why would they? The wisest course would be to quarantine Ship. They could be bringing back diseases, plagues, who knows what.

Ship says it would be his prerogative to negotiate with ThreePlanets on the health and safety of Ship, crew and guests with ThreePlanets. This would be resolved mostly by machinery. - Amorella

2121 hours. That sounds too reasonable, Amorella.

You know better having been to ThreePlanets in Running Through and Merlyn's Mind. There would be debate and the rise of emotions among the marsupial-humanoids. I can hear one of them thinking now, "Where are we going to run to when the earthlings arrive?" -- "They are stand and fighters, once they arrive on ThreePlanets they will hold their ground at all costs." -- "They will feel cornered with no place to run. They will be terrified, just like us." -- "We could die of a plague in a week. Maybe they have it with them to use on us. We could all be dead in less than a week." - Amorella

This is depressing to think on. The best laid plans of mice and men . . . everyone would have the same justified fears.

Why are you suddenly smiling? - Amorella

The irony. The reality -- just like real life on Earth except it is on ThreePlanets. Dark, dark humor, Amorella.

         Post. - Amorella

Notes - 14 June 2012 is the focus for Pouch 21 /

Mid-afternoon. You ran some errands had a late lunch at Panera/Chipotle then ran more errands. Presently Carol is on page 258 of Low Pressure by Brown, and you are ready to begin work on Pouch 23. - Amorella

1445 hours. I am, but I probably ought to re-read the last segment because I have no idea what happened and where we are going from here. I haven't really thought about it. I don't know how we can have any kind of theatrical conclusion to this one other than heading off to Three Planets. Surely that wouldn't happen in short sequence time-wise. Homes would have to be rented out and the three would have to be on some sort of sabbatical leave even if Blake does own the company Jason does not work for him. We need a timeline too. It hasn't been too long since the beginning -- that was in January 2012.(I think) -- maybe each segment needs a timeline in which to begin and conclude the book (with Merlyn as the reference since they are his dream.)

Let's go with June, Flag Day, 2012 how's that? - Amorella

What a neat gesture, Amorella, Thursday 14 June 2012, Flag Day, it is.

         What happens?

What you thought, they leave for Three Planets. - Amorella

I never really know that what flashes through my mind in a nanosecond, then registers and moves on, is me or you.

This is a problem real people would have if they were actually telepathic isn't it? - Amorella

Yes. I would have never considered this but yes it is. Slaughterhouse-Five comes to mind immediately and the Tralfamadorians, who were shaped like the plumber's friend, but were also telepathic. I never understood why they needed a spaceship as such, other than for one individual. Everyone else could just sense herorhis thoughts and be there in spirit only.

Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death

(1969) is a satirical novel by Kurt Vonnegut and World War II experiences and journeys through time of a soldier called Billy Pilgrim. Ranked the 18th greatest English novel of the 20th century by Modern Library, it is generally recognized as Vonnegut's most influential and popular work.

Plot summary of Slaughterhouse-Five

Chaplain's Assistant Billy Pilgrim is a disoriented, fatalistic, and ill-trained American soldier. He does not like wars and he is captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans put Billy and his fellow prisoners in a disused slaughterhouse (although there are animal carcasses hanging in the underground shelter) in Dresden. Their building is known as "Slaughterhouse number 5". The POWs and German guards alike hide in a deep cellar; because of their safe hiding place, they are some of the few survivors of the city-destroying firestorm during the Bombing of Dresden in World War II.
Billy has come "unstuck in time" and experiences past and future events out of sequence and repetitively, following a nonlinear narrative. He is kidnapped by extraterrestrial aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. They exhibit him in a zoo with B-movie starlet Montana Wildhack as his mate. The Tralfamadorians, who can see in four dimensions, have already seen every instant of their lives. They say they cannot choose to change anything about their fates, but can choose to concentrate upon any moment in their lives, and Billy becomes convinced of the veracity of their theories.
As Billy travels—or believes he travels—forward and backward in time, he relives occasions of his life, real and fantasy. He spends time on Tralfamadore, in Dresden, in the War, walking in deep snow before his German capture, in his mundane post-war married life in the U.S.A. of the 1950s and early 1960s, and in the moment of his murder by Lazzaro.
Billy's death is the consequence of a string of events. Before the Germans capture Billy, he meets Roland Weary, a jingoist character and bully, just out of childhood like Billy, who constantly chastises him for his lack of enthusiasm toward war. At their capture, the Germans confiscate everything Weary has, including his boots, giving him hinged, wooden clogs to wear; Weary eventually dies of gangrene caused by the clogs. On his deathbed, Weary manages to convince another soldier, petty thief Paul Lazzaro, that Billy is to blame; Paul vows to avenge Weary's death by killing Billy, because revenge is "the sweetest thing in life." Time-traveler Billy already knows where, when, and how he will be killed: he is shot with a laser gun after his speech on flying saucers and the true nature of time before a large audience in Chicago, in a balkanized United States on February 13, 1976 (in the future at the time of writing).

Notes - how to build a thoughtful story? / more considerations

You are at the China City Buffet waiting for Bud C. and Rich G. You are thinking on the Tesla S and wondering how it got its name after seeing a You-Tube video on its manufacturing this morning (sent to you by Sharon and Bill C.). The last time you were in an auto plant it was is Michigan with Tod S. your brother in law (since retired) who was a chemical engineer at the plant in the 1990's and earlier.

Later afternoon. You had a good lunch with Rich and Bud, lots of discussion, grandkids, etc. You basically lived next door to both, as Kim and Jessie and Mandy were toddler age up into junior high school. Both are professional software/hardware electrical engineers. Once home you and Carol chatted for an hour or so while she was washing and drying clothes. Presently you are at McD's on Tylersville Road near the I-75 interchange. Carol is reading, page 191 of Brown's Low Pressure.

You haven't thought much about the last segment, Pouch 21 and although you are interested it is not so much so as the first three last segments. Why is that, orndorff? - Amorella

I don't know. One would think I would be keyed up about finishing the book, but it is a revision and I am not so in to publishing and all that. Most of the fun is in the writing. Plus, although I enjoy cleaning up the chapters into final draft status, especially for Owen and Brennan; it is not the same as being a first reader. I will have to adjust my head to it. I probably should be thinking about final draft criteria and objectives so I keep a consistency in tone and style throughout. Personally, the book would probably be more easily read as four separate novelettes but then how would readers see the connections? Part of the fun is working the connections in your head as you are reading, at least it is to me. This way there are so many more dimensions to the story -- a kind of logo block construction in the mind is created.

Maybe if the segments were of particular colors, like blue for the Dead; yellow for the Brothers; red for Grandma and orange for Pouch. And, shapes; each could be a mix of four shapes but not always the same, maybe three shapes like heart and soul and mind -- triggers to thought building. Doug and I have been talking about how a deaf person learns to think -- most say they think by signing, they dream in signs. Maybe there is another 'language' of sort that can show the reason or intent of the segment.

Maybe I can exploit this as a communication form so others can better follow the patterns and colors and come to their own conclusions about these books, one book at a time. I will have to read up on how the mind thinks. Grammar has to be the key with vocabulary and tone, setting, character etc. -- what are those short story characteristics? Each segment is as a short story. Random thinking here, but it might make the story easier to communicate. Maybe like the construction of a model railroad - tracks to junctions etc. -- a visual guide of some sort to allow the reader to check which roads lead to the twilight zone - that kind of thing. Okay, I'm done. (1652)

You are moving into the hinterlands, orndorff. You are looking for a simple mapping device in which to register concrete and abstract thinking, physical and metaphysical thinking. The problem is that each heart and soul and mind can be in any kind of thinking; plus, the point is that the heartansoulanmind are much more efficient working together whether in the physical or metaphysical (spiritual) world. Carol is ready to go. Later, dude. - Amorella

You are home. Carol is feeding the cats. You are suddenly thinking you had silly thoughts but fortunately you wrote them down so you can better see what you are attempting to say. - Amorella

1721 hours. I am not looking for 'ten ways to see a thought' nor am I looking for some sort of spiritual road; how many spiritual roads do people need anyway? I guess I am looking for a way to build a thoughtful conditional of existential value. - rho

This is better, more focused but not parallel tracked. For instance, I am one track and you are another. The grammar engine must run on both tracks. This is a simple concept. - Amorella

I agree, and parallel track concept we both understand without the need of words. Maybe this is the only base we need in the story line.

We can build on this. Post. - Amorella

2124 hours. Carol and I just finished watching Masterpiece Theatre's first episode of "Silk" whose setting is in a law court in England. A point made was that the lawyer wants to lead the jury to a particular conclusion and to do this in such a way that the juries think they came to the conclusion themselves. My point here is that I do not want to set up the books so that the reader comes to a particular conclusion. I want the reader to search for herorhis own conclusion as the meaning of the books. I have purpose in writing them in that it is necessary for me to get the words out of my heartansoulanmind before I leave this world. Every word that I put down allows me to feel freer inside. I don't need any other purpose, but for the reader's sake I want herorhim to gain a greater mental dimension of what reality may be. I want herorhim to think and draw herorhis own conclusion about how reality is represented by our humanity and how it is represented without our humanity. We make the difference, not the world; otherwise we might as well be stone. (2134)

More thoughts, more considerations. Put this on hold for now. We'll come back to it after we complete Pouch 21. Post. - Amorella

Notes - 334 words on Grandma 21 / Grandma 21 completed

You finished your walk at Pine Hill Lakes Park and Carol is still working on hers, which is much longer of course. You have a very pleasant Sunday morning, which a few others are also enjoying at the park. Not a cloud in the sky and the humidity isn't up so several small private planes have been up and about leaving engine noise wake along the way. Let's work on Grandma 21. - Amorella

1100 hours. I am surprised that you feel I am ready for writing. I feel like I'm vegging a bit today. We do have the windows open though. The cats love sitting in the screened windows and it was very comfortable sitting, eating breakfast and reading the Sunday paper. This, it appears, will be our outdoor activity for the day as the heat and humidity are on the rise; and Carol already requested we have a stop for cold drinks at McD's on Kings Mill Road before home. A stop at Kroger's on Kings Mill before home.

         1328 hours. I have transcribed 332 on Grandma 21.

Time for a break, son, and lunch, no doubt. Drop in what you have and post. - Amorella

Grandma’s Story - Twenty-One  ©2013, rho wkg. draft

“Today we meet Merlyn,” announced Renaldo, “if he is at the encircled stone as we’ve been told."

"What good will he do for church stories. He's only half converted from what I understand."

"Natural religions are easily altered to Christian faith, if Merlyn is indeed half Christian then his stories may be also. Besides," said Renaldo slyly, "the stories give him an edge so we can see how it goes."

"He knows Greek and Latin. That's a plus." She paused in consideration. "If we do happen to meet him, let's begin in Greek."

"It is hard to know what manner of man he is other than he is clothed in rumors."

"Let's go with tall, lanky, unkempt and wild-like fellow," laughed Criteria, "sitting on a like minded horse."

"Sounds like most any Celt of Welsh or Scot descent one might comes across in this hill country," chuckled Renaldo.

Further along Criteria and Renaldo slowed their horses when they spied a man glancing back while running ahead on the right. “I wonder if that him,” said Renaldo. “He looks the part.”

Tall, slender with wild reddish hair and those ridiculous gray trousers. From here they look to be a hundred years old, thought Criteria. Finally, Criteria shouted, “Would you like a ride?”

To which the running man replied in Greek, “I have two legs, no need of four more.”

She slowed her horse to a walk while declaring in Greek, "You are Merlyn."

He slowed his pace, smiled politely and in Greek added, “What bee your pleasure, m’Lady?" A quick pause, then, "Who bee your Roman companion?"

Criteria softened and as if by previous signal Renaldo came forward and speaking in Latin, "I am Renaldo a priest and this is my companion Criteria. We collect stories for Rome."

"Celtic stories?" responded Merlyn in classical Latin.

Good naturedly, Renaldo answered, "Any stories. We understand you never tell the same tale twice. He gestured and said, "You may ride my horse and I will with Criteria ride."

You had a late lunch at Smashburgers and drove about the outskirts of town looking at newer homes. Presently you are facing west, sitting in the shade at the far north lot of Pine Hill Lakes Park. Carol is on page 50 of Brown's Low Pressure. You are wondering how Grandma's 21 is going to unfold as there is a section with Vivian in the picture with Merlyn and Criteria and Renaldo.

1509 hours. It sounds interesting to do but in the original the set up is with who Vivian is, or rather, was in the original. --  (1527) - I have pulled lines, some 1660 words from the original soul cut to add to come to a conclusion of only about 440 more. This is a lot of condensing and deleting but I feel it fits within the story, at least as of now. What do you think, Amorella?

You are between two parallel tracks, boy, and even if condensed it would still need a 'kicker' to end the segment with. - Amorella

         I need a break then.

First, I will go through with what you have here, these 1660 words some of which are from your soul's bones. We will complete Grandma's 21 today. Take your break. Carol is on page 77 of Low Pressure; thus showing the sense of time in another's personal setting. - Amorella

1559 hours. We are home. Carol is watering the flowers; the recycle and waste bins are outside by the garage and I swept the garage floor. It is a beautiful and warm August day in Mason, Ohio.

1707 hours. I am ready to continue with Grandma 21.

Good, let's get to it.- Amorella

You had left over stuffed peppers for supper, watched the news and a recent "Suits". Since you have been working on Grandma 21 and find yourself surprised at its completion. -Amorella

2213 hours.  I cannot at this moment tell what it says as the words are still jumbled about my head. I am not sure it draws a straight line from beginning to end, but the concluding prophecy for Merlyn is a twist I enjoy, at least at the moment. Holistically, the segment appears to make sense but this is the story without the words attached. Surely this must sound odd, but someplace within I understand this segment without a word from memory. - rho

Interesting, boy; but I don't know what you want me to do about it. Add Grandma 21 then post. No more tonight. - Amorella

Grandma’s Story 21 ©2013, rho, draft for GMG.Vol.1

Both were surprise to find Merlyn leading them from the main road to an unobserved grassy path where the walked the horses in an awkward quietness for most of the afternoon. As they were coming upon a rise Merlyn said, "This travel has been for the comfort of the Lady. We are about to enter the grounds of the Stones where I have royal guests.

Ever so politely Criteria asked, "How did you guess my royalty, Merlyn?"

“The voice, m’Lady, "undresses the disguise. I know these things, as did my predecessor Taliesin-the-Bard.

“I cannot tell where you are from Merlyn,” said Criteria in a flirtatious mood.

“I set my dialect to match your own m’Lady, it is a part of my stock and trade.”

In undisguised resentment Renaldo interrupted, “We are here, Sir, on behalf of Rome to transcribe and collect stories for the Bishop.”

"I am not one for titles, Renaldo," quipped Merlyn. "My interest here is building blood. You see the three ladies standing by the pond. They are of the House of Avallon, you two shall meet these sisters first."

Hesitant, Criteria declared, "My uncle was King in Greece. However, my work is common within the Church of Rome."

"Royal blood rises or falls together," grumbled Merlyn. Shortly we will be done with this.

Should I begin with Holy Island or Merlyn, thought Criteria upon approaching the three with Merlyn at her side. The Queen, Igraine, smiling and extending her hand in kindly tone said, "I am glad Merlyn invited you, Prince Criterion of Greece."

Having forgot who she really was, Criteria stood momentarily startled.

"Please meet my sisters, Morgause and Viviane."

"Did you ever meet the Bishop of Rome, himself, Prince Criterion?" asked Morgause.

She showed them her ring, "You are charmingly social overwhelmingly friendly," commented Criteria, "I am sure we are in some ways cousins and share blood, but first you need know this is but a disguise for Rome and safer travel. No one knows of my womanhood save Renaldo my priestly companion."

Upon the further introduction Queen Igraine modestly whispered for all to hear, "Your secret is frozen within us. What secret is it in the man that you the woman now know?"

First, the laughter then the quiet talk, concluded Merlyn as the chat meandered into the great house for further discussion.

In due time Morgause commented, “we are envious of our sister, but it is our husbands’ fault not hers. The men do not have the ambitions we three have.”

“You work within Columba’s league,” suggested Criteria.

“We work within the Celtic church. We are women of the old ways because of our mother. We did not always get along with her, and we do not get along with each other. This meeting is political theatre.”

Deciding she could put her trust in them, Criteria said, “Merlyn told me he has a plan.”

“Merlyn always has a plan,” laughed Viviane. “He said the spirits will be here with us when he tells his story.”

Criteria reflected aloud, “He didn’t tell me he had a story to tell.”

In a while with Criteria and Renaldo, Morgause, seemingly alone, commented, “We are envious of our sister, but it is our husbands’ fault not hers. The men do not have the ambitions we three have.”

With this Criteria abruptly commented, “You work within Columba’s league against Rome.”

“We are Greek also,” replied Igraine in quick surprise to her younger sister, “Our line flows from Abraham and Sarah through Troy.”

“I know you have Greek blood through Princess Argotta,” said Criteria. “We are no doubt cousins, but the Church feels you have a story of another notable bloodline.”

More quietly Morgause noted, “We have the blood of Joseph of Arimathea.”

"And," added Viviane with Merlyn at her side, "perhaps James, the brother of Jesus."

Queen Igraine coldly eyed Merlyn while adding sarcastically, “We use the Dead as they use us."

Suddenly standing as stone among these few, Merlyn's eyes rolled into the top of his head and he thought these unscheduled prophetic words he could not, in those days of life, come to say aloud.

In these books Grandma has the gift of gab,
For Merlyn’s crystal to send this private confab;
The Dead speak short; the Dead speak true,
This fiction, my earthy child is set in you.

Shortly after noon. You and Carol spent the morning working in the yard, mostly digging and moving dirt mixed with tree chips to other parts of the backyard. The only thing left to do in today's work is rake to level what is left from the large tree out front. You basically are ready to throw soil on top, level and plant grass seed. This next week is going to be a more normal August summer hot with humidity. You are both satisfied with the morning accomplishments.

1243 hours. We are off to Subway to pick up food for a picnic in the shade down by the Little Miami near Foster.

Fosters (sometimes given as Foster) is an unincorporated community in southern Warren County, Ohio, United States. It straddles the Little Miami River in Deerfield and Hamilton Townships. It is located about two miles southwest of Hopkinsville, two miles west of Maineville, and two miles northeast of Twenty Mile Stand just off State Routes 22/3, the 3C Highway. (In the 1930s, the State of Ohio erected a new high bridge over the river that bypassed the community.) The community is in the Kings Local School District and is served by the Maineville post office. The settlement was originally called Foster's Crossing, and had its own post office. It is in the Little Miami telephone exchange. Governor Jeremiah Morrow once lived here.
The Little Miami Bike Trail, which runs from Milford to Spring Valley, runs through the community on the eastern shore of the Little Miami River.

"The Tiny County Village of Foster Is Recalled"

Foster lies in Hamilton and Deerfield Townships, with the Little Miami River bisecting it. Roads that lead to it are the Old Three C Highway, the Fosters-Maineville Road, the Socialville-Fosters and the Davis Roads. The once booming town was named after the Foster family. James H. Foster came to the area in 1841 or 1842 and built a mill and hotel on the east side of the river. The hotel was named the "22 Mile Stand," it being located 22 miles from Cincinnati. James was considered the leading merchant of the town until his retirement in 1865.
A most unique event happened in the village of Foster on February 13, 1861. The presidential train of Abraham Lincoln passed through the town on its way to Columbus from Cincinnati, traveling on the historic Little Miami Railroad.
An early history of Foster, written in 1868, and inserted into The Western Star, points out that the turnpike and railroad crossings were located on the east side of the Little Miami. The article also states that forty-seven houses were grouped together at corners on both sides of the river. Twenty-seven of this total consisted of business houses and shops. There were three dry goods and grocery stores, a merchant tailoring house, two boot and shoe establishments, a first class boarding house, a grain depot, a flouring mill, a sawmill, a distillery, a railroad depot, a cooper shop, a blacksmith shop, five beer saloons, and a tollgate house. A quote is made that "of these saloons we have just five too many." There were two express offices, a post office, a telegraph office and a railroad ticket office.
The writer of the article [wrote] that there were no schoolhouses or churches, but there were two day schools kept, and a Sabbath school makes mention. The day schools were allocated for the smaller children, and for those who were unlikely to walk one-and-a-half or two miles to the larger district school. One was a German school and the other American; ladies of the village taught each. The writer indicates that a visit had been made to the latter and it was well conducted. The Sabbath facility was a union school. Although small, the officers and teachers were determined to keep it up.
Foster's population, in 1868, was aggregated at 180. One hundred and five were German, fifty were American, and twenty-five were Irish. The German residents were an industrious and business type group. Most owned real estate and acquired a comfortable home with a few acres of ground.
A gristmill was located on the river and cut off about an acre of ground, which formed an island that incorporated three residential homes and a sawmill. The timbers of the covered bridge were framed on this island.
As we now continue our own story with respect to Foster, we find a Mr. M. Obergefell, a German immigrant, arriving from Cincinnati in 1865. He was a merchant tailor by trade and made clothes for the Civil War soldiers while a resident of the Queen City. He was the builder and proprietor of the "Liberty House," and lived next door. It was said that he could serve up a "square meal" and a "suit of clothes" in equal fashion. Earl Maag, a former resident, said there were stone cattle pens underneath the hillside building of the Liberty House. Maag's grandfather purchased the dance hall from Obergefell and renamed it Maag's Hall. The establishment continued in use for dancing until about 1930. Maag said dancing was mainly quadrilles and that German type bands and fiddlers performed.
According to the 1903 Warren County Atlas, Brazilla Clark is credited with building the first mill in Foster in 1806. Possibly the most significant resident of this quaint town was Governor Jeremiah Morrow. His gristmill was one of the foremost mills in the territory.
Augustus Hoppe was a miller for Jeremiah Morrow. He later purchased the Foster Mill from Seth Greely in 1886. The milling enterprise was a fruitful family business until January 1944, when a mill accident took the life of Edward Augustus Hoppe, son of the original proprietor.
The mill produced cake flour from soft winter wheat and supplied Lebanon and Cincinnati bakeries until its shutdown. It was said to have used a fine silk cloth to sift the flour so that in the end it was truly "as fine as silk." It also produced and distributed pancake four and cornmeal. The "Pride of Miami" was the mill's top brand. It also did custom grinding for families who brought in their wheat, corn, rye, barley and other grains used primarily for hog feed, as Warren County was one of the major suppliers of processed pork in early times. (The foundation of the old mill and much of the millrace is still in existence at this writing.)

Hoppe's Island was a get-away paradise in the 1920's and '30's. Families from near and far frequented the island paradise for entertainment as well as for relaxation purposes. The island is a physical protrusion into the Little Miami, it originally being formed by the millrace of Hoppe's mill. However, a portion of the millrace is gone and the formation of an island is no longer visible. Provisions of the entertainment circle included swimming, canoeing, picnicking, dancing, or perhaps just the place for a family gathering. Mrs. Bernice Hallam, daughter of Edward Augustus Hoppe, recalled that on Sundays it was impossible for visitors to reserve a picnic table unless at the premises as early as 5 a.m. Before the horseless carriage, many people drove their horse and buggies to the park. (The famed bandleader, Ace Brigode, owned and managed the park for a while, but afterward discontinued it.)
After the death of Mr. Hoppe, in 1944, the island went into private ownership. It never again enjoyed the success it had between WW I and WW II.
Glenn and Vivian Irwin purchased the 30 by 50 structure which was, as was previously described, the historical Liberty Hall. The dwelling is located on the 13 1/2 acres, which was formerly the mill site and that of Hoppe's Island, now called Glenn Island. (The State purchased the grounds several years ago and transformed it into a public park.)
Travelers, in stagecoach days, crossed the river when traveling the old Montgomery, Hopkinsville and Wilmington Pike, now known as the Old 3 C Highway.
They could not have envisioned that the progress of Foster would be put on the back burner because of the huge viaduct that would span the Little Miami many years later. The viaduct was started in October 1936, and completed October 1, 1938. For the readers who are interested in statistics, the bridge, at a cost of a half a million dollars, took over 90,000 man-hours to complete. Approximately 9000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,200,000 pounds of reinforcing steel were used in the structure. Six spans, varying in length from 155 to 175 feet, support the viaduct. The deepest concrete pier is securely anchored, its foundation being 27 feet below the water level. The mile and a quarter project, which includes its approaches, was unique due to the fact that it spanned three forms of transportation; water, rail and motor. At the center pier, the roadway stands slightly over 75 feet above the Little Miami River.
The post office name in Foster was changed three times, first Foster's Crossings, next Fosters, and lastly, Foster. "Foster's Crossings" first postmaster was Joseph T. Matthews, his tenure beginning October 27, 1859. Later postmasters and dates were: William S. Foster, 17 Nov 1863; Daniel K. Gordon, 13 Oct 1865; George W. Thompson, 7 Mar 1866; Albert A. Cooling, 18 Nov 1867; William W. Burroughs, 6 Jan 1874; and, lastly, George B. Fouche, 28 Aug 1883.
"Fosters" was the next selected name and was begun January 7, 1884, with George B. Fouche still retaining the position of postmaster. Peter B. Hall, 2 Feb 1887; and again, George B. Fouche, 10 May 1889, followed him.
The new name, "Foster," took effect June 7, 1893, with Jacob Englert as postmaster. Ernst Hoppe, 29 May 1897; Louise Hoppe, 18 Oct 1910; and John Maag, 8 July 1915, followed him.

A long-standing tribute to the past was the home of the "Blue Danube Tavern." Long before the turn of the century, it was a fashionable three-story hotel and restaurant. Earl Maag said his aunt, Theresa Englert, operated the building as a summer resort from 1892 to 1907. During the flood of 1913, a big log reportedly washed downstream and knocked out one end of the building. The old wooden bridge was also washed away in the flood. It retained the Blue Danube Tavern name from 1934 until the tavern was purchased in 1975 and completely remodeled.
The building, which sits next to the new bridge structure (the George Terwilleger Bridge), is now known as "The Train Stop Inn."
The tavern, prior to its renovation, was known as "a jumping off spot for trouble." One former deputy sheriff said:
"As I remember it, Foster was a thriving little town, full of all kinds of fights and shootings. We never had many calls to the Blue Danube, but when we did, it was a good one." The last few years saw a gradual decline in the one time prosperous village. As the older citizens moved on, it left a vacancy that could not be filled as in olden days.

You are at the Rahe Park on the west side of the River and now that lunch is done you are thinking to erase what you find interesting about Foster, Ohio history because it is not applicable to the Merlyn stories. However, this is not the case because you receive the writing from yourself through me, Amorella. Your interests are incorporated into the books because I have no choice but to use or not use them. If I do, they are considered an authenticity to the story because you once dug up the details either out of curiosity or general interest. We might use a bit of this later so make a copy to put into book three when Grandma's stories are from Ohio locations. The above looks pretty much like typical Ohio history of the times, only we'll put it in Grandma's story in central Ohio, perhaps during the 1920's or 30's along the Olentangy River in a fictional town south of Delaware, somewhere around SR 750 connects with the Olentangy River Road in present day Powell, Ohio. - Amorella

1428 hours. I'm glad we are setting up a folder for books two and three. I had that set up during the first three books, that is a folder each for books four, five and six. I still have those folders but I don't know of what use they will be now.

Check them out boy. We can still use the same folders but book four is just about done. - Amorella

This is very odd. I have already used most of these references. Topics: Ancient Greeks; the Basic Human Condition; Cognitive Processing, Black Holes; Thucydides; and Waves and Categories. One of the keys though is 'Soki material.' (1435)

Carol wants to leave after she finishes her new Sandra Brown book chapter. She is currently on page 31 of Low Pressure. We'll take a look at the Soki material and how it relates to Diplomatic Pouch. - Amorella

1629 hours. I have been reading over documents in the "Soki Material" folder for the unwritten book four in 2007 (when I was working on the original book three, Merlyn's Mind. There is lots of stuff in here, the real surprise are the notes from my hypnotic sessions.

Now would be a good time to update the blog on the hypnotic sessions. Drop them in here, read over them carefully and post. - Amorella

1728 hours. I cannot remember when I typed up the original handwritten notes of those sessions but I am assuming it is in 2007 because other documents in this folder are of that time period, and it would have been about twenty years later.

Notes on Hypnotic Sessions: April-May, 1984,
With Paul Payne, Ph.D.
University of Cincinnati.

First Session: April – only preliminary discussions and background information

Second Session: [Three o’clock] 10 April

You are getting quieter, into yourself. [Dr. Payne talking in bold]

1. Find a space to look at as you outstretch your right arm. Balloons are holding it up in your own time.

A visual flows away the tension until the eyes take on the tension to let them flow away; then the eyes move to the back of the head, then down

2. Your body fits into [becoming] the chair

3. The weight of cement blocks on your arms, which feel quite heavy

4. Fingers are asleep after which hand goes to sleep

5. Visual of ‘swirling: like raw red meat going down two tubes

6. Visual of a seashore – green water, and I am underwater snorkeling -- You don’t really need to heed what I say. Let yourself relax in your own time, in your own way.

7. I can taste the salt water; I really can taste it [Out of light trance]

8. In trance:  This time I am sitting on a couch with a skinny me on one side of the couch, and a normal me on the other. This was very realistic. I was not thinking about the fat and skinny I was thinking about how it is to be two places (in my mind) at the same time. [Out of light trance]

9. In deeper trance. Visual of a blank globe – my mind is elsewhere, an alternate universe > a visual abstract of nothing until it appears that ‘more’ is in the still nothing -- I am constantly aware and learning

10.  a. ready to be coming out
       b. beginning to come out
       c. coming out slowly
       d. almost out, ready to open eyes
       e. okay, open your eyes

Dr. Payne asks, "What is your reaction?"  It is interesting, quite interesting.

Another much deeper trance to begin: Okay, back into it.

Okay, you are relaxing --

The colors appear quickly this time

Go back to an early time --

I think perhaps the seashore, but I am in the Middle East. Ancient classical Greek buildings. I see an old man with a staff.

What does he tell you about eating?

I think [I do not visualize him] he says: “Don’t listen to your body. Your body should not eat.” [I am conscious of an outside voice.]

The inner voice says, “Walk. Have good eating habits”  “That will protect your body.”

Okay. Go back a hallway of memories, a hallway with doors on both sides. [These vividly appear in my mind: Light walls with oak doors and brass doorknobs.] Go to an early memory. Stand outside the door. Think about how old you are. Go back to ten or eight. [I am already three.] When you are ready, raise a finger.

This trance is much more real, like living in a virtual world. [I travel down a hallway two or three feet above the floor. Quickly I go; then very quickly.]

How old are you?

I put up three fingers (I don’t believe I did that, but I did.)

Observe the setting as you open the door.

I am at Grandma Orndorff's [at 103 West Walnut Street]. There is a party and we are ready to eat. Uncle Ernie, Aunt Patsy, Mom and Dad and Grandma and Popo [my name for my grandfathers]. It is just like real. It is real.

Things are confusing. All these big people are moving around. Dad is home from the Army? It is confusing.

Describe it.

We are getting ready to eat. I feel uneasy. I do not feel good about the situation. There is something disturbing in the dinner; something about my father. I am anxious about him or the dinner situation. I am uncomfortable with my father there at the table. The house and the people are just there. Still and moving objects. Grandma has on a gray or olive dress. There is little or no conversation. As usual, I was quiet too. We were heading for the dining room from the living room when I left to come back.

I talk to Dr. Payne. [my voice sounds quite different and from my back left. I sound like Donald Duck’s voice] I am shocked by this sound but continue talking.

Do we want to leave?

No. It is confusing, but I want to stay. When I came in I walked in from the west wall under the fourth or fifth step (of the steps leading upstairs. I heard a growling inside my head.

Okay. Come out and close the door when you are ready.

[I linger] then I come back

Okay. You will remember what you want and keep buried what you don’t want to remember.  1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5

Aftermath of Second Session.

I come out. Unbelievable! The mind is so powerful.  [it is four-twenty in the afternoon]

First: I said, “We’ll see ya,” as I left his office. Driving home from the session my left hand covered my mouth the whole way. I am excited (positively) about being hypnotized and quite disturbed by it too. I think, ‘It is not good to be hypnotized. Some things should not be understood.’ this statement runs through my mind.

Later: I had two helpings of food at supper, plus two pieces of cheese and I felt better. That night as I went to bed there was an uneasy tension in my head, a kind of ‘growling’ outside of me.

At three in the morning I wake up talking with my muse saying, “We’ll go do this.” As I head down the hallway. My head is confused, as it was during the session. ‘When three I felt I was not in sync with other people. I can’t communicate to other people. They don’t care to really listen. My imagination is wilder than usual. I never have understood what is real and what is not. This doesn’t help. [These are my reactions from 0300 to 0430 hours that next morning, the 11th of April.]

[Reaction at 0630 hrs. same morning.] “Anyone who thinks he knows what reality is, is quite mad.”

Memory one.

My parents think there is something wrong with me. They want to send me away. I hear them talking with Grandma about why I like to sit in the closet by myself when I am four or five years old.

Memory two.

I picked pennies off the wall and put them in a jar. [I remember that. I can still visualize the pennies.] They were real to me. I took the jar, full of pennies and headed uptown to buy ice cream or a milk shake. Mom stopped me on the corner of Park and Knox and said, “There are no pennies in the jar.” [I remember her saying it in the tone of ‘playtime is now over.’ We walked back to the house. I was not upset.]

Memory three.

My father just talked to me about something. My father thought I was crazy. I wasn’t though. I just liked to pretend a lot. I still (in my forties) like small rooms, closets. I can get a hold of myself in a small room. It helps to keep me together; it helps to keep the pieces together.

Memory of the hypnotism.

I am blue-gray and pushing sideways out. My brain is gray and behind my face (only) a bubble encloses me to my ears. The center, my center is empty, but imperfectly empty.

The raw red meat (myself or my thoughts are like chewed raw red meat) is/are  put through two parallel vortexes and swallowed up. The chewed up meat goes clock-wise in the left vortex and counter-clockwise in the right vortex.

Dr. Payne then ordered two EEG’s; one in the hospital and another twenty-four hour monitor. Also, he ordered one or two brain scans. Nothing reported abnormal to me other than a technician monitoring an EEG said I had a glitch in the left temporal lobe. Dr. Payne found nothing abnormal enough for further consultations. He thought I was interesting because I could get into deep hypnosis so quickly. Personally, I thought I was going to be too stubborn to be hypnotizable.

Session Three:  April 84.

Drawing one. I am looking at an eight and a half by eleven sheet of unlined paper. I will go down the paper from top to bottom explaining what I sketched with a blue ink pen.

            1. two eyes, narrow slits, big dark pupils

            2. three arms  with three fingers each; one on the left (fingers towards center of page; and two on the right (fingers towards the center).

            3. a three dimensional glass rectangular box with arms extended on either side of it. And a heavily drawn circle drawn inside on the right in the box.

            4. half way down on the page another arm on the right with fingers extended towards the center just beneath the box

            5. two eyes at the center of the page as above as in the first drawn

            6. one large eye that extends from one side of the page to the other and is about an inch in height in the middle with one large eyeball with a diamond shape within the roundness of the large pupil

            7.  one eye slightly to the right of center

            8. two eyes centered with about two and a half inches between the two, then I wrote: “Lots of light. Lots of eyes,” in the bottom right hand corner of the page.

Drawing two. Title: “Monster”  [The arms (with no hands or fingers) reaching to the incubator]

An outline of an arm in a white-coat [looking at it from the top] about two and a half inches long and an inch wide, rounded on the top and the bottom is straight across. The angle is about forty degrees down and in towards the center of the page. On the other side is the same loaf-like appearance, rounded on the top and the bottom is straight across, also angled in at forty degrees.

About an inch and a half below these two appendages is a flat head with two eyes staring out at me but from upside down. A sixteenth of an inch nose (above the eyes) and a quarter inch mouth above the nose. My face is more triangularly shaped and I have two small curved lines coming out beneath the chin as shoulders.

No other body references. No hair or ears or eyelids, eyebrows or the like. I almost look Little Green Man alien. I wrote below the sketch: “sleeves with no hands” on the left and on the right “attempt to raise head to get another perspective – very, very difficult – raised it about an eighth of an inch. Below these notes across the bottom of the page: “These flinging, moving, nonsensical white tubes of body do not control me. I control myself.”

Evening of 22 April 84 at 2050 hrs. in a self-induced intuitive drawing I create the actual size of a symbol of my ‘muse’  (most likely after my third session)

A single line slanted to the right of perpendicular about twenty degrees. The line is one and one-half inches long. From the top of this line down one-quarter of an inch is a horizontal line one-half inch on the left of the near vertical, crossing, and one-half inch on the right side of near vertical.

A second horizontal line below the first one is down five-sixteenths further and it is three and one-half inches long. It cuts through the near vertical at one and one-fourth inches.

A third line intersects at one inch from the top down the near vertical. This third horizontal line is three inches in length. It intersects at one and one-quarter inches from the left and there is about a quarter of an inch between the second and the third horizontal line. This symbol of crossed lines is enclosed in an oval about four inches wide and one and one-half inches high. The near vertical does not touch the oval by a sixteenth of an inch at the bottom and an eighth of an inch from the top of the oval.

For the symbol to make sense it must be enclose within the oval. That is the actual size of the symbol of my muse within my mind, looking at it from its side from my mind’s point of view.

Dr. Payne thought the incubator description may have been authentic, at least how I remembered it. Several reasons for this were, there were no corners on the incubator and the sleeves had no hands or fingers extending (a newborn would not see these), and the most interesting to him was that I already had a developed sense of ‘self’ as a head, or rather, as a neck trying to move upward. I was definitely conscious of that sensation while under hypnosis.

Session Four: 8 May 84 Final session.

Comments and Drawing three. [After a session taking me back before birth]

I feel an alien-like sense within myself. The presence entered to control, entered to live even though I could just as easily go to another place, one as good as, better, and/or worse environment. I feel a sense of contradiction. It is interesting. Pressures are interesting as a perspective.

I visualize white boxes next to white walls. I am lying on a cushioned oval board in the center of this small room. The box-like machines are the size of clothes washers or dryers.

Each works like this, going counter-clockwise. The first is a triangle shaped box with the point on the floor it is ‘input” moving to the next box which is above another box (all boxes are holographic-like). The flat top of the triangle box moves to the right side of the top box. The top box then moves and connects with the third, bottom box that is the “output” box.

The others use these machines. Their ‘skin’ is grayish and rough like a pine-cone. They wear no clothes. They are tall and slender and their eyes (two each) appear as a combination of the eyes of a cat and a turtle. They (there are two) have a strong sense of understanding my situation. They say nothing but their eyes have an attitude or tone of “We’ll shuffle you through. Do not worry.”

Reaction to the session and drawings:

While driving from UC to Mason on I-75 I have my hand over my mouth on the way home, until I was conscious of it, then I put my hand down. I was immediately concerned that I had conjured up my whole identity on a false premise. It was a scary statement to think about. [Strangely, even now on 24 August 2013 it is still an unnerving statement.]

The hypnosis effect was not as vivid as in the other session yet chunks of ‘things and shapes’ and uneasy feelings marked the venture -- like when I was going through no tunnel but I heard the grandfather clock ticking as I pulled it from the wall and walked into the wall to get back to the incubator. Maybe Dr. Payne spoke too fast and/or maybe I tried to get into the trance too fast. I was in trance for forty minutes for the ‘incubator’. No real monsters, no real fears afterwards. Nothing exceptional, except there was a ‘disjointedness’ a sense of being mentally able to be in two places at once. [Today, in 2013, I can still do this.]

This took most of the afternoon to copy. You copied your notes religiously and made only slight changes for clarity. - Amorella (This statement and below were written in 2007.)

I haven’t really read over these notes in a long time, and never with the purpose of copying them. The first session we just talked. The second session I saw the Greek buildings. The third was going back to three. The fourth and final session was when I ‘created’ the going back before birth somewhere deep in my mind. Dr. Payne laughed and said I probably projected from watching and reading too much science fiction in my life.

I remember readily agreeing with him. I just thought it was an interesting experience to put my mind through. After I completed those sessions I practiced holding the string with my fingers and having a washer at the bottom of the string and a target below the washer that said Yes on the vertical line and No and the horizontal.

I would silently ask myself questions and the string would swing yes or no or in a circle clockwise or counter clockwise both of which signified undecided. That was the beginning of the experiments that ended up with the letters to the Rabbi who wasn’t there and to Romela who in 1988 changed her name to Amorella after she Romela helped me with the first version of Stuck (published in 2001) called at the time Spice. The rest is written down. Wow, if I finish the third book in January I will have worked on this marsupial series for twenty years.

I have not looked at these notes as far as I can remember since I typed them up in 2007. I found one of the sketches I drew just after hypnosis. It is on the blog, posting date: 18 September 2009.

Posting: 18 SEPTEMBER 2009:

***

I have made several references to the hypnotic experiences in this blog over the years. I have never forgotten how important it is to be able to but the mind in two places at once as I did the first time with the fat me on one side of the couch and the skinny me on the other; except they were both me as I am. This is the power of the mind at work. I realized it then and I recognise it now, and as before and after, my view of reality has never been the same since. This is demonstrated in my notes and my Merlyn books.  (2032)- rho

Once more you feel freer; as you did when you first published this sketch. - Amorella

That is because I am reminded that I understand a truth about myself, about who I am, about what it is to be human, and I can readily accept this truth and know that I am not delusional or in madness. - rho

Post. Sleep well, orndorff. - Amorella
