Notes - essence / researching / consciousness hypothesis / friendship

Mid-morning. You are at Joseph Toyota on Colerain having Carol’s car twenty thousand mile service done. You are wondering about Doug’s comment yesterday:

‘If the soul is our essence it may be quantum mechanical in nature, which would allow many contradicting thoughts and feelings to exist at the same time.’ – Doug Goss

New knowledge about the remarkable properties of black holes
Dec 11, 2012

In theoretical physics you can have different planes that behave like black holes and they are called black branes. When black branes are folded into multiple dimensions they form a 'blackfold', which new research shows has a relationship between gravity and fluid mechanics and solid-state physics. Black holes are surrounded by many mysteries, but now researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute, among others, have come up with new groundbreaking theories that can explain several of their properties. The research shows that black holes have properties that resemble the dynamics of both solids and liquids. The results are published in the prestigious scientific journal, Physical Review Letters.

Black holes are extremely compact objects in the universe. They are so compact that they generate an incredibly strong gravitational pull and everything that comes near them is swallowed up. Not even light can escape, so light that hits a black hole will not be reflected, but will be entirely absorbed, as a result, they cannot be seen and we call them black holes.

"But black holes are not completely black, because we know that they emit radiation and there are indications that the radiation is thermal, i.e. it has a temperature," explains Niels Obers, a professor of theoretical particle physics and cosmology at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen.

Multiple dimensions

Researchers know that the black holes are very compact, but they do not know what their quantum properties are. Niels Obers works with theoretical modelling to better understand the physics of black holes. He explains that you can look at a black hole like a particle. A particle has in principle no dimensions. It is a point. If you give a particle an extra dimension, it becomes a string. If you give the string an extra dimension, it becomes a plane. Physicists call such a plane a 'brane' (the word 'brane' is related to 'membrane' from the biological world).

"In string theory, you can have different branes, including planes that behave like black holes, which we call black branes. The black branes are thermal, that is to say, they have a temperature and are dynamical objects. When black branes are folded into multiple dimensions, they form a 'blackfold'," explains Niels Obers, who worked out this new way of looking at black branes with associate professor in theoretical physics at the Niels Bohr Institute, Troels Harmark, back in 2009.

New breakthrough

Niels Obers and his two doctoral students Jay Armas and Jakob Gath have now made a new breakthrough in the description of the physics of black holes based on the theories of the black branes and blackfolds,

"The black branes are hydro-dynamic objects, that is to say that they have the properties of a liquid. We have now discovered that black branes also have properties, which can be explained in terms of solids. They can behave like elastic material when we bend them," explains Jay Armas.

He explains that when the black branes are bent and folded into a blackfold, a so-called piezoelectric effect (electricity that occurs due to pressure) is created. This new effect can be understood as a slightly bent and charged black string with a greater concentration of electric charge on the innermost side in relation to the outermost side. This produces two electrically charged poles on the black strings. Black holes are predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity. This means that there is a very surprising relationship between gravity and fluid mechanics and solid-state physics.

"With these new theories, we expect to be able to explain other black hole phenomena, and we expect to be able to better understand the physical properties of neutron stars. We also expect to gain a greater understanding of the so-called particle theories, which are, for example, relevant for understanding the quark-gluon-plasma in the primordial universe," explains Niels Obers.

Essence

In philosophy, essence is the attribute or set of attributes that make an entity or substance what it fundamentally is, and which it has by necessity, and without which it loses its identity. Essence is contrasted with accident: a property that the entity or substance has contingency, without which the substance can still retain its identity. The concept originates with Aristotle, who used the Greek expression to ti ên einai (τὸ τί ἦν εἶναι, literally meaning "the what it was to be" and corresponding to the scholastic term quiddy) or sometimes the shorter phrase to ti esti (τὸ τί ἐστι, literally meaning "the what it is" and corresponding to the scholastic term haecceity) for the same idea. This phrase presented such difficulties for its Latin translators that they coined the word essentia (English "essence") to represent the whole expression. For Aristotle and his scholastic followers, the notion of essence is closely linked to that of definition (ὁρισμός horismos). . . .

Existentialism was coined by Jean-Paul Sartre’s statement that for human beings "existence precedes essences.” In as much as "essence" is a cornerstone of all metaphysical philosophy and of Rationalism, Sartre's statement was a repudiation of the philosophical system that had come before him (and, in particular, that of Husserl, Hegel and Heidegger). Instead of "is-ness" generating "actuality," he argued that existence and actuality come first, and the essence is derived afterward. For Kierkegaard, it is the individual person who is the supreme moral entity, and the personal, subjective aspects of human life that are the most important; also, for Kierkegaard all of this had religious implications.

1137 hours. Home. Obviously, I am turning away from Sartre’s statement that “Existence precedes essences” unless that is, from a human perspective this would always be the case because consciousness of essences could not exit before existence of consciousness. This does not mean (at least to me) that essence cannot exist without human involvement or interaction.

We will keep on working this. Post - Amorella

1318 hours. I have been reading about the “metaphysics of quantum mechanics” and am uncomfortable with this line of thought because the focus is on metaphysics and not physics.

1635 hours. I have found nothing usable in an hour or so of online research (nothing more than I recently already posted).

Carol sprained her left knee this morning and you both decided on a Subway lunch (she didn’t have to get out of the car) and you drove to Rahe Park along the Little Miami for a picnic. Afterwards you helped Carol gather groceries from Kroger’s on Mason-Montgomery Road. This took more work than you imagined it would because she was using the cart to lean on and you forgot your cane. – Amorella

1641 hours. We both appeared a bit older than we are at the grocery today.

1828 hours. A new February issue of Popular Science arrived today and one of the focuses is on alien-like life. Two bacterium mentioned are Shewanella oneidensis and Geobacter metallireducens. Both use electricity to generate metabolic activity. This makes me wonder of I can use the idea of the soul using the spiritual energy of the heart and mind for metabolic activity, that is the soul would grow with the food of consciousness and the higher the consciousness the greater the metabolic energy created.

Shewanella oneidensis is a bacterium which can reduce poisonous heavy metal and can live in both environments with or without oxygen. This proteobacterium was first isolated from Lake Oneida, NY in 1988, which is where the name is derived from. This species is referred to as Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, indicating "manganese reducing", a special feature of this particular organism. It is a very common misconception to think that MR-1 refers to "metal-reducing" instead of the original intended "manganese-reducing" named by Professor Kenneth H. Nealson, who first isolated Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Shewanella oneidensis is a facultative bacterium, capable of surviving and proliferating in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The special interest in S. oneidensis MR-1 revolves around its behavior in an anaerobic environment contaminated by heavy metals such as iron, lead; perhaps even uranium. Some experiments suggest it may reduce ionic mercury to elemental mercury. Cellular respiration for these bacteria is not restricted to heavy metals though; the bacteria can also target sulfates, nitrates and chromates when grown anaerobically.

Geobacter is a genus of proteobacteria. Geobacter are an anaerobic respieration bacterial species which have capabilities that make them useful in bioremediation. The geobacter was found to be the first organism with the ability to oxidize organic compounds and metals, including iron, radioactive metals and petroleum compounds into environmentally benign carbon dioxide while using iron oxide or other available metals as electron acceptor.

Ask Doug what he thinks of your hypothesis on heart and mind energy (consciousness and higher consciousness) for the soul to grow. Post. - Amorella

1903 hours. I get excited about such ideas as these then wane on them the next day or so. It is interesting though. It appears to have plausibility to me as an analogy, at least as far as the books go.

You watched much of the Presidential Address and received a positive note from Doug. Add and post. – Amorella

Dick, I am impressed with your blog and the work and research that you put in it. As to your hypothesis on heart and mind energy (consciousness and higher consciousness) for the soul to grow, I would have to say that many monks of all faiths would agree that heart and mind energy lead to self enlightenment and a development of the soul.

Great job. Doug
