Later afternoon. You, Carol and Kim had breakfast at First Watch on Polaris before heading up to the house to meet with your M/I supervisor, Jim and one of his assistants, Adam who will be taking over with most of the supervising until the M/I closing in late June or early July. On the way back to Mason you got a hold of the Dryer Vent Wizard and he is presently replacing some piping with ridged piping rather than the flexible piping you put in some fifteen to twenty years ago. - Amorella
After supper at Potbelly's you stopped by B and N and bought Comey's A Higher Loyalty, and had the car washed. In the Introduction Comey writes about one's self is a form of vanity, and that normally he wouldn't write a book, especially about himself, but for our modern times. You however have spent much time writing about your inner thoughts and self. - Amorella
1943 hours. His comment embarrasses me.

vanity - noun - 1 she had none of the vanity often associated with beautiful women: conceit, narcissism, self-love, self-admiration, self-absorption, self-regard, egotism; pride, arrogance, boastfulness, cockiness, swagger, rodomontade; informal big-headedness; literary vainglory. ANTONYMS modesty.2 the vanity of all desires of the will: futility, uselessness, pointlessness, worthlessness, fruitlessness.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT WORD pride, arrogance, conceit, egotism, self-esteem, vainglory, vanity If you take pride in yourself or your accomplishments, it means that you believe in your own worth, merit, or superiority—whether or not that belief is justified (she took pride in her work). When your opinion of yourself is exaggerated, you're showing conceit, a word that combines pride with self-obsession. If you like to be noticed and admired for your appearance or achievements, you're revealing your vanity, and if you show off or boast about your accomplishments, you're likely to be accused of vain glory, a somewhat literary term for a self-important display of power, skill, or influence. Arrogance is an overbearing pride combined with disdain for others (his arrogance led him to assume that everyone else would obey his orders), while egotism implies self-centeredness or an excessive preoccupation with yourself (blinded by egotism to the suffering of others). While no one wants to be accused of arrogance or egotism, there's a lot to be said for self-esteem, which may suggest undue pride but is more often used to describe a healthy belief in oneself and respect for one's worth as a person (she suffered from low self-esteem.

1950 hours. Thus, of this vanity I am guilty. What an embarrassment. It is time, I feel, to end this open-to-the-public thought-on-paper. Good grief.
If to write about oneself is vanity, than all of humanity has been guilty of this sin. The Dead and the Living. We all share in the experience of weaving a narrative in which we alone are the protagonists, and the stories that matter most to us are those whose threads we can integrate into our own tapestry. I wouldn't take too much of Comey's false modesty to heart; he certainly didn't.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Zach. I appreciate your words. As a favorite singer of mine once sang, "It's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning."
